Last year I had a revelation.  It wasn’t a cloud-parting, heavens-opening, God-speaking revelation.  It was more of a why-haven’t-I-figured-this-out-yet, I’m-sure-old enough-to-know-by-now, revelation.  Here is what it was…

Summer is busy.  Perhaps busier than the ordinary time of the school year.

I know, this isn’t news to you.  You are all smart people, who probably figured this out years ago.  Perhaps because I went back to school only 10 years ago, and finished only 7 years ago, or perhaps because

I am now back in school (though not on a regular school schedule), but I used to still be under the impression that once school let out, the days got easier.  I got to go on trips, to go to camps like Montreat, or mission trips / work camps, or family vacations.  These were planned for me, all I had to do was pack and show up, and then have fun.

Now I’m involved in the planning.  Sometimes my involvement is heavy, like family vacations or other things.  Sometimes my involvement is moderate, like with Montreat’s Music and Worship or mission trips / work camps.  Sometimes my involvement is light, like this year’s VBS.  But it is never just pack and show up.  I suppose there is growing up in that.  Is it wrong to long for the days gone by?

All of that said, I still love the difference that summer brings.  While I have realized that it is still just as busy as the rest of the year, if not more so, it is also a good change of pace, a different set of things to do, and in some strange way, refreshes the rest of my time by the fact that the work is different and the regular time work takes a back seat.  It’s like exercising (so I’m told).  For 9 to 10 months I work one particular muscle area.  Then for 2 to 3 months, I leave that one mostly behind and work a different area.  At first, the new area is sore, but it’s a change, which is good.  And, then when I go back to the original area, it is more rested, another welcome find.  Somehow my soul finds rest in different manners.

What is your particular set of adjustments that summer brings?  I’m sure you have at least some.  I also hope that you can find new and exciting ways to bring rest to your soul, even in the busy-ness that the summer brings.  May we all,

Be Well,

I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus.
– I Corinthians 1:4 (NRSV)

On Sunday, 2 July, we are going to have a special treat.  We will have our celebration of worship as usual, and then we will head out back for a cook out and time of fellowship.  You are invited to come to worship, as always.  If you want to stay afterward, you are invited to bring something to share.  The church will provide burgers, dogs, and drinks.  Whether you come just for worship, or for worship and the picnic, you are invited to dress casual (many of you do this anyway).  We hope you will join us for a fun event.
