As the pumpkin patch closes, and all traces of the 2005 patch are erased, here is what I will remember and some of the things that I am thankful for:

· The ‘Patch Detour’ and two set up days (wondering what the construction plan is for

          Medlock Bridge Road, when they will move those pipes, and when the construction

           will end)

· 1877 pumpkins and the countdown as the last 77 came off the truck

·       Sunny days for three straight weeks

·       Preschool visitors

o   Storytellers:  Peter Pumpkin, Mother Pumpkin, Farmer Jack/Ken/Tom

o   Homemade cookies

o   Goodie bags and coloring books

o   New games like ‘Find my hat’

o   Treasure hunts and pumpkins with stars

·       Nighttime in the patch (great lighting)

·       Painted pumpkins

·       Frankenstein gourds

·       A place where children didn’t hear ‘don’t touch’

·       Getting to know other church members better during the quiet times

·       Visitors

o   First time and returning for the third or fourth time

o   Families who come just to take pictures

o   People who asked ‘what do you do with a pumpkin?’

o   From around the world, Sweden and Taiwan to name two countries

· Smiles on children’s faces

· Our youth taking an active role welcoming and assisting visitors and maintaining

           patch quality

· Scouts

o   Scouts and their parents/leaders helping on delivery day

o   Scouts providing shift coverage and excelling at quality control

· Thousands of pumpkins (though one thousand would have been enough)

· Halloween night in the patch

· And after the patch closed

o   Free pumpkins for Norcross Cooperative Ministry

o   Three pickup-truck loads of pumpkins to Yellow River Game Ranch (buffalo, donkeys, and deer like pumpkins)

O Arriving at church only two days after the patch closed, and discovering no trace

    at all of leftover pumpkins or empty pallets

 

I purposely didn’t name any names as I would be sure to accidentally overlook someone.  I think I can speak for Larry also as we thank all of you for giving your time and talent to the patch.  Though it will ultimately be a Session decision next year, we hope to be back for year five in 2006.
